Constructing proportions to solve application problems

Constructing proportions to solve application problems Ratio and proportion is one of the basic topics in math. Proportion is constructed to solve word problems or a questions where quantities maintain a fixed ratio or the same fractional value. . In such cases the question can be analyzed and the fixed ratio can be calculated. Proportionality always maintains a fixed ratio or fraction between two quantities. For example, a / b = c / d. It can be written as a : b = c : d. When things are in proportion their relative sizes are the same. Example 1: Do these form ratio and proportion? A basket has10 apples and 5 oranges. Another basket has 30 apples and 15 oranges. Solution: The number of apples and oranges in the baskets are to be compared. The ratio can be expressed as: First basket: Number of apples/ Number of oranges = 10/5 = 2/1. Second basket: Number of apples/ Number of oranges = 30/15 = 2/1. The ratios are the same hence they form a proportion. Question: Multiple choice question (Pick the correct option.) Find the k in the proportion k : 3 = 4 : 3? a) 3 b) 12 c) 4 d) None of these. Correct answer: option c Explanation: The proportion can be expressed in a fraction in the form. This gives, k/3 = 4/3. Now multiply both sides of the equation by 3. This gives 3(k/ 3) = (4/3) * (3); k = 4. Hence the value of k for the given proportion is 4.

How to Ace Your College Research Paper

How to Ace Your College Research Paper A common assignment that confounds many college students is the well-known and often dreaded research paper. Your professor asks that you use a variety of scholarly sources, but what exactly does that entail? And how can you find these sources? The following research strategies will help you ace your college research paper quickly and easily. Pick the right topic College research papers usually require that students select a topic of their choice. Compile a list of a few topics that appeal to you. Do some preliminary research using Internet search engines to ensure that there is sufficient information on the topics you have brainstormed. Then, meet with your professor to find out what he or she thinks would be the best topic for you to select. It is vital that the topic you select for your research paper is feasible. You must consider the assignments deadline, your understanding of the subject matter, and how much research information exists on the subject. An obscure topic could equate to weeks of unproductive, frustrating research and a low-quality paper. Here are some helpful tips for writing an essay. Use your schools online databases It is likely that your college library maintains a system of virtual databases. These typically allow you to access a vast supply of scholarly journals for free on any of your librarys computers. Most colleges allow access to their database systems through the librarys webpage. Ask a school librarian for the password, or if prompted, sign in with your school ID. Using an online database system is an efficient way to access high-quality scholarly information. Within each database system, there is typically a feature to locate specific databases by subject, such as anthropology or chemistry. Be sure to take advantage of the search tools within each database itself, which can save you a great deal of time. You can often find detailed information within a few seconds of searching. Research experience is important for grad school applications, so this may be your chance to prove you have what it takes if you plan to go on to grad school! Another benefit to using online databases is the ability to cite a source online (A.P.A., M.L.A, etc.). This capability makes it simple for you to select and generate the appropriate citation type. You can then paste the proper citation onto the Works Cited page at the end of your paper. Ask your professor which style is preferred for the class. Take advantage of your library and ILL Visit your schools library and explain to a librarian that you are working on a research paper. Librarians can provide you with the support you need to locate useful texts as sources for your paper. Large universities often have specialized libraries with reference librarians who are qualified to help you access specific material in a wide array of subjects, such as psychology or geology. Specialized libraries can make finding precise information much easier. If you cannot locate a particular printed text, or if a journal article is not immediately available from your library, consider utilizing your schools ILL service. ILL stands for interlibrary loan. With an interlibrary loan, you can typically obtain a physical or electronic copy of the text that you need at no cost from another library. An interlibrary loan will rapidly provide you with the resources you require. Sometimes, loans can even arrive the same day you make the request! Move from general to specific sources Begin your research by seeking out sources that broadly examine the topic you wish to study. These less specific yet pertinent sources can direct you toward other sources that are more precise. Inquire with your professor or TA about helpful general sources that discuss the subject you are researching. Try to constantly watch for additional sources. While reading a source, whether it is more general or more specific, be sure to review the footnotes and bibliography. By doing so, you will likely find a plethora of other relevant and credible references to point out in your research paper. These are some great tips to help you organize your notes. If you pinpoint your focus on the above strategies, your college research paper should come together quite effectively. Best of luck!

Planning for AP and SAT Subject Preparation Working Backwards

Planning for AP and SAT Subject Preparation Working Backwards At AJ Tutoring, part of our core mission is to help students navigate the test-taking process with a minimal amount of stress. Attaining this goal involves planning ahead. If you’d like to talk through your specific situation, please reach out to us. To learn more generally about the process for a successful test preparation season when it comes to the subject-specific exams, read on!First, we have to understand what the AP and SAT Subject exams are. For a break down, click here.Second, we have to envision how the tutoring schedule works. Here’s a breakdown of our approach to AP/SAT II test preparation:Sessions HomeworkWe meet with students for 3 to 5 weekly sessions leading up to the AP exam or SAT Subject Test. Homework consists of a combination of full-length practice tests and shorter assignments.Course ContentOur exam prep program covers content and test-taking skills, including question interpretation, guessing strategy, time management, free response strategies, and essay writing.MaterialsWe use official, published exams that have been administered in past years, as well as our own curriculum that we update annually to reflect any changes in the AP courses or SAT curricula.Keeping in mind that AP exams are in May (you can find a schedule here) and most students aim to take the SAT Subject Tests in June (schedule here), the most common preparation schedule would be to start in late March and plan on meeting once a week in April and May to fit in preparation for one AP exam and one SAT Subject Test. For example, if you are enrolled in AP US History, have loved learning about US History, and are getting a great grade in the class, you might think about taking the AP in May and the SAT Subject Test in June. You can connect with a history test preparation expert in early March to schedule a weekly session starting in mid-to-late March and also clear out time for weekly homework assignments through the June SAT Subject Test.If you need to double up on AP pr eparation and SAT Subject Tests (a not uncommon conundrum), you’ll want to plan on meeting twice per week and likely starting earlier. It’s not too early to solidify a plan for which exams, what schedule, and which tutors will make the most sense for you! If you’d like to talk through your specific situation, please reach out to us! We’d be glad to have a conversation.

ADHD and Smart Phones

ADHD and Smart Phones If you have a child or teen who does not already own a smartphone, then chances are that your child is asking (or begging!) you for a phone almost every day. Youve probably heard that everyone else has a smartphone, that there are apps that your child or teen just must have, or that their social life will be over if they dont get a smartphone soon. While kids and teens can be persuasive when it comes to making an argument for having a smartphone of their own, and it can be tempting to get one for your child if for no reason other than to put an end to the constant begging, getting a smartphone for your child is a big step and one that should not be taken lightly. As a general rule of thumb, experts recommend waiting until a child is 14 before giving them a smartphone. However, given the challenges that come with having ADHD, many 14-year-olds with ADHD may not be able to handle the distractions and responsibilities that come with owning a smartphone. The organization Wait Until 8th, which is dedicated to encouraging and empowering parents to wait until 8th grade to give their child a smartphone, provides factors for parents to consider when deciding whether or not to give their child a smartphone. Each of these factors represents an area of difficulty for most kids with ADHD: Does your child respect and obey rules? How are your childs social skills? Is your child responsible for his or her belongings? Does your child struggle with screen limits? If your child or teen struggles with any of these areas in their daily life without a smartphone, then the challenges will only be magnified once a smartphone is added into the picture. So, while many 14-year-olds may be ready for a smartphone, many (or most) 14-year-olds with ADHD will not be ready to handle this responsibility. In addition to the readiness of the child or teen, parents should also consider their readiness to monitor and set limits around smartphone use. Are you ready as a parent to teach your child how to use a phone responsibly, to monitor when, where, and how they are using their phone every day, and to enforce rules and consequences consistently? Parenting a child or teen with ADHD requires more effort and energy than parenting a child without ADHD we often say that parents of kids with ADHD are Super Parents given all that they take on in a day. With that in mind, consider whether you have the bandwidth to add smartphone management to your plate. If you decide that your child or teen is not ready for a smartphone, what should you do? How do you avoid giving in to the pressure from your child or feeling like you are somehow hurting your child by denying them something that so many of their friends already have? First, know that you are helping your child and not hurting them by holding out on giving them a smartphone. Many kids with ADHD need extra time to mature before they are ready for added responsibilities like having a smartphone, and it is your job as a parent to make some hard choices in order to set your child with ADHD up for success long-term. Second, let your child or teen know that they will not be getting a smartphone any time soon, and no amount of whining, negotiating, or begging will change this. If your child or teen thinks there is even the slightest possibility that you will give in and get them a phone soon, they will continue to push and push in the hopes that you will come around. If they continue to push on the issue, consistently respond by telling them it is not open for discussion and then walk away. The briefer and more consistent you are in your response, the less time your child or teen will spend negotiating. Lastly, if you and your teen need or want a way to stay in touch without a smartphone, purchase a simple flip phone. This will get the job done without introducing most of the risks and responsibilities that come with owning a smartphone. If you do think that your child or teen may be ready for a smartphone, then be strategic about how you introduce the phone and your rules for smartphone use ABOUT DR.
